‘Molestation victim’ turns hostile, instructor suspended

Indore : In a sudden change of events, a trainee woman pilot, who alleged molestation by an instructor at Madhya Pradesh Flying Club (MPFC) — backtracked on her allegation on Friday even as the club authorities suspended the accused instructor.
SP (West) Abid Khan said that the 27-year-old trainee pilot from Amravati in Maharashtra sent a letter to the Aerodrome police, mentioning that she had a verbal altercation with instructor Tapan Bhunia but she mistakenly exaggerated the issue and she was sorry for it.
The trainee pilot’s brother had turned up at Aerodrome police station and handed over her letter to the police.
“Though the woman had written that she exaggerated the matter, her statements will be taken under Section 164 of the CrPc to ensure that she was not changing her statement under pressure,” Khan said.
If she continues to stick to her new stand in the case, she is likely to be booked under Section 182 and 211 of the IPC for filing a false molestation case.
The Aerodrome police had filed a molestation case against Bhunia on Wednesday on her complaint.
After learning about the incident, the club authorities on Friday morning suspended Bhunia and initiated a departmental inquiry against him.
“If charges against him are found true, Bhunia will be terminated,” said MPFC secretary Milind Mahajan earlier in the day.
However, all attempts to contact him back failed following the new development in the case.
The woman pilot had received training in the US through a flying club in Punjab. As per private airlines norms, the trainee pilot had to complete 10 more hours of flying for which she had joined the MPFC.
In her complaint to the police, the victim had alleged that Bhunia during training closed room of the club and made physical advances on her on Tuesday.
She claimed to have rushed out of the room crying and shared the incident with chief flight instructor Capt Mahajan. Later, she along with her brother reached Aerodrome police and lodged the complaint.
Why she changed her statement?
Has the woman trainee turned hostile under any pressure? Police did not rule out this possibility. “We will try to ease her out during questioning and promise security if she is being threatened,” said the police. Aerodrome police station TI KL Dangi said that he had tried a lot to establish a contact to her the entire Friday but she did not talk to him. Later her brother told me that she was terrified. However, in the evening he turned up with her letter which stated that it was a verbal duel between her and Bhunia but she exaggerated it.
