Adani group eyes airport foray via Ahmedabad

Port-to-power behemoth Adani Group is now trying to enter the airport sector in its home state Gujarat. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone is among the nine big players, including GMR, GVK and Tatas, who have evinced interest in the government move to privatize airports at Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. Sources say Gautam Adani-led group is interested in the Ahmedabad airport.
Other players who have participated in Airports Authority of India's move to give out these airports for operations, management and development include Essel, Siemens, Flemingo, IBDF Zurich and Cochin International Airport. The Adani Group did not comment on its proposed plans for airport segment.
The NDA is keen to avoid the 'mistake' of UPA that have led to private airports in Delhi and Mumbai becoming very expensive for both airlines and passengers. Aviation ministry officials say the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) will keep a close watch on these airports to ensure that costs do not go up too much - as happened in Delhi - to avoid steep charges later.
