Jet Airways, Air India gear up to match JV Vistara

There's a bonanza in store for full service flyers in India. The promise of unmatched comfort by Tata-Singapore Airlines' (SIA) JV Vistara has made legacy carriers Air India and Jet Airways constantly come up with passenger-friendly moves.

Jet on Friday waived penalty charges for changing travel plans within 24 hours of booking tickets on its website and its mobile app. Air India has re-started serving hot snacks or meals on flights of under an hour, instead of just biscuits and peanuts.

Sources say the three — AI, Jet and Vistara — will be in a constant battle to lure full service flyers — who will now have the last laugh. While low IndiGo and GoAir were not impacted by last year's launch of Tata-AirAsia budget carrier, Vistara has created ripples for AI and Jet. The biggest worry for these two is Vistara's ability to mount long-haul flights when the 5 year 20 aircraft rule is relaxed, thanks to Tata's financial strength and SIA's famed reputation. SIA's clout in Star Alliance means that Vistara may enter the alliance sooner than later.
