Soon, fly into Bandra-Kurla Complex as government plans helipad

Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), which has emerged as a prominent business district, may soon get a helipad which can be used by corporates, politicians and government agencies in case of an emergency. A bullet train terminal and the International Financial Services Centre are also coming up in BKC and the MMRDA grounds there is a popular location for rallies by political parties.

As of now, the city has helipads at Raj Bhavan, Navy Nagar and Mahalaxmi race course, besides one at Juhu aerodrome and the Santacruz airport.

Metropolitan commissioner RA Rajeev said, “There is going to be demand for such a facility in BKC and that is why we have invited expression of interest.” The helipad will come up on the one of the vacant MMRDA plots. “This will also help us earn revenue from the vacant land,” said Rajeev.

The site will be finalized as per guidelines of the Director General of Civil Aviation and all necessary approvals from the ministry of defence will be sought, said an official.

Another official said, “In areas that are far-flung from Mumbai, quality healthcare services are not available and there is a fear of fatalities if treatment is not provided within the golden hour. In such cases, air ambulances can be used to facilitate movement of accident victims from far-off places to Mumbai. Also, the helipad will be useful while ferrying organs for transplants.
